Day 3 - August 28th, Buñol

Travel from Valencia to Buñol for La Tomatina (To Go breakfast) Today is the big day! We travel by bus to Buñol bright and EARLY, leaving Valencia at 5am to get situated in Bunol where we will have breakfast before heading to the festival location.

At around 10 AM, festivities begin with the first event of the Tomatina, the “palo jamón”, or “greasy pole”. The goal is to climb a greased pole with a ham on top. As this happens, the crowd work into a frenzy of singing and dancing while being showered in water from hoses. Once someone is able to drop the ham off the pole, the start signal for the tomato fight is given by firing the water shot in the air and trucks make their entry. This is the sign that the festival is REALLY ready to begin.
The fight starts at 12 noon!

The fight lasts for about an hour. After which fire trucks will roll through the town “hosing people down” with water and cleaning the streets. We’ll change clothes, have lunch and head back to Valencia around 3:00 pm where you’ll have the rest of the day free.
